Manohar Parrikar, the Builder of Modern Goa dies at 63 after battling cancer

Late Manohar Parrikar, Former Chief Minister of Goa and former Defence minister died at the age of 63 at his son’s home in Panaji on 17 March 2019. Manohar Parrikar was a political leader of Bharatiya Janata Party. He was suffering from pancreatic cancer for more than a year.

The announcement was made in a tweet by President Ram Nath Kovind, he tweeted, “Extremely sorry to hear of the passing of Shri Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister of Goa after an illness borne with fortitude and dignity. An epitome of integrity and dedication in public life, his service to the people of Goa and of India will not be forgotten”.

Mr Manohar’s health had been fluctuating and gets critical on Saturday morning. His health was being monitored by the doctors of Goa, Mumbai, Delhi and New York since February. But since last month, he was admitted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital near Panaji.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “ Shri Manohar Parrikar was an unparalleled leader. A true patriot and exceptional administrator, he was admired by all. His impeccable service to the nation will be remembered by generations. Deeply saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and supporters”.

Late Mr Manohar has been known for his dedication for work. He said he would, s“I will serve Goa till my last breath”. The four-time chief minister had made public appearances with a tube in his nose, looking frail. He had also spotted at the state assembly to present the budget, triggering Congress allegation.

“Goa BJP government was formed because of him. He also became defence minister. Again on party’s request, he became the Goa Chief Minister,” said Union minister Nitin Gadkari, Manohar Parrikar’s long-time friend and party colleague.

Mr Parrikar had been honoured with several awards. In 2018, he honoured by Honorary Doctorate by National Institute of Technology Goa. In 2012, CNN-IBN Indian of the year in politics category and in 2001, Distinguished Alumnus Awards IIT-Mumbai.
